They’re a crafty bunch: Shifty Lizard rapidly becoming a highlight of the SA beer scene

The term "backyard operation" is often used derogatorily, depending on the industry and context. Not in this case.

While the base of operations for co-founder Lee Stone's young and exciting Shifty Lizard Brewing Co is a modest shed behind his Old Noarlunga home, it is a reflection of how personal and intimate the project is, rather than an indication of the product's quality.

You can taste passion and perfectionism in every sip. Brewing tasks with requirements that exceed the Shifty shed are instead undertaken in the facilities of the nearby Vale Brewing Co.

Shifty Lizard has launched itself into an already lively craft beer climate in South Australia with a range of brews, the quality of which is genuinely competitive with the Ponies, Pirates and Sheds of the land.

The Shifty Lizard IPA is not your average IPA, a style in which you’re so often hit with either a big shot of hop or malt with the other hiding in the background. Shifty have found a way to show off the fact you can have a big tasting beer with balanced hop and malt, without being over-the-top bitter.

The impeccably named Stouty McStoutface is up there with the best our MANABOUTADL craft lovers had in that style, with its archetypal chocolate flavours perfectly pronounced. It's a smooth, flavoursome winter special that has even been shown to be popular among those who don’t often enjoy stouts.

Joining the Shifty range is the recently launched Irish Hoppy Red Ale, a devilishly potent brew that lives up to its name in all regards.

But it's the trusty Pale Ale that should be the point of most pride at Shifty Lizard. It's the one you're most likely to spot around Adelaide, and for good reason. The striking branding on the 330ml cans is fitting of a drop that is uniquely intense, while still so sessionable. Gloriously sharp and bitter with subtle citrus flavours, this has the makings of an SA icon.
