What your partner wants… For Valentine’s Day

Trust me, I know! Valentine’s Day comes with so many pressures.

From one point of view, if you’re with someone you care about deeply then everyday should be special. I'm not here to say it's not, but to play devil's advocate... The other point of view is that it’s out there. There’s often an internal argument, you don't want your partner to feel neglected because everyone else is out there doing something special, but you don't want to cheapen your feelings by doing what everyone else is doing on such a widely celebrated and commercialised day.

So, let’s go with – it's safer to do something for that special person in your life. It doesn't have to be extravagant or expensive.

Dinner is a lovely sentiment, whether you book somewhere you know is a little bit special or if you’re cooking for your partner at home, the idea is that they don't have to cook or clean.

In fact, although there are many versions of the reason Valentine’s Day exists, the most common story of how it was celebrated by the Romans all those years ago, was to sit down to a huge feast. The fact that you’ve put in the effort to do either is a win for you.

Gifting – this will totally depend on what stage your relationship is in. If you're still in the honeymoon phase (your first Valentine’s Day together) or your relationship is a little further advanced.

In the honeymoon stage it’s completely acceptable to do the flowers, chocolates, teddy-bears or a cheesy gift to remind your significant other of you. Those gifts are ‘safe’ yet still ‘picked-by-hand’ – remember, effort = win 😉, are you seeing the theme here?

You might even do the underwear thing. Yep, I said it. I'm not setting you up here, the tip is to take your partner with you.

A) It’s a bit of an exciting experience for both parties

B) It reaffirms to your partner how attractive you find them

C) You don’t want to guess the size and have it completely wrong… that may put a dampener on the night (not talking from experience by the way, just putting myself in those shoes).

If your relationship is more developed, it’s time to step things up. Your partner has probably done a lot for you during this last year and so the words 'appreciation' and ‘pamper’ come to mind.

If it’s not a night or weekend away, then maybe it’s a session at a spa or a shopping trip to purchase that special item they’ve had their eye on for a while.

So, I hope I’ve simplified things for you. It doesn’t have to be that hard, a little bit of forward thinking, planning and ultimately what we call ‘effort’ (that word again 😉) will have you in the good books on that special day of romance.

As a personal stylist, I’ve been impressed with how many of you that have been in contact to enquire about styling services for their partners. It tells me that you’re much more in tune these days with what your partner is telling you (and reading between the lines as they’re not often totally direct about it) – winning!

I get that sometimes you just need some guidance and it’s handy to know that someone like me is on the other end of a phone call.

So, if you need help with the perfect gift for the partner, I can help you…
