The Mill (Adelaide) Although we are post-Fringe you can still hear the faded echoes of eccentric sounds across the city of Adelaide filling non-traditional live music spaces. Adelaide recovers well after our mad season, instead of hibernation creatives from all sectors continue to create helping to keep our incredible city vibrant. Rowena Garcia from Man About Adelaide popped into The Mill, an exciting multi-purpose creative space on Angas Street on Thursday 18 April 2019 to attend the album launch of Upon A Hill by Jenn Barrett and The Night Shift.
The Breakout room at The Mill is a perfect space for an intimate live show. To start the evening emerging performer and songwriter Abby Nicholson or ARIES performed eight very groovy, R&B pop songs with her supporting band. At an instant ARIES demanded your attention with her powerful, retro-soul vocal whilst the band revived a groovy sound that throws back to the soul era but with a contemporary twist. Some stand out songs were Better Than You, Dirty Little Thief, and 21st Century Girl. ARIES is a whole lotta hair, and has a whole lotta attitude, and I have no doubt that we will be seeing and hearing a lot more of her in the near future. Jenn Barrett and her band The Night Shift then took to the stage with their eccentric art rock set. Moody, atmospheric, theatrical, dramatic, and romantic this music feels experimental but has a solid rock base. Vocalist Jenn Barrett, clearly inspired by the quirk and the quaintness of Kate Bush, provided an energetic performance but was unfortunately drowned out by a bass dominated mix. Damien Williams on guitar was stand-out with some sensational lead breaks but again unduly understated in the mix. Jenn Barrett and The Night Shift have created a unique sound that will appeal to lovers of progressive art rock.
